The Secrets to Creating Power in the Golf Swing

The Secrets to Creating Power in the Golf Swing

If you want to hit the ball farther it may be time to hit the gym first. For years, golfers worked endlessly on their swing but neglected their overall physical fitness until Tiger Woods came along. Woods has shown what the combination of a sweet swing and a powerful body can produce and the other professional golfers have taken note.

Building muscle is the way to create power but for golfers lifting weights alone won’t help add distance to your drives. A weight training program has to be done in connection with an extensive stretching routine to maintain maximum flexibility which is critical in the golf swing. Tiger Woods training regime starts with a half hour of stretching before he starts into lifting weights or his cardio.

A good stretching routine should start by working the legs. To loosen the muscles in the front of the legs, grab your ankle and pull the foot up behind you. Next stretch the back. This is done easiest by putting a chair in front on you, grab the back of it and bend down.
To stretch the hamstrings in the back of the leg bend at the waist and try to place your palms on the ground. A good turn is essential to any golf swing and your stretching should include bending your body by rotating your shoulders from side to side. An easy stretch to work the hips before teeing off is to sit on the bench at the first tee, cross the ankle of one foot across the opposite knee and then pull your risen leg up toward the opposite shoulder.

Correct body balance is another key to creating power in the golf swing. Your weight should be evenly distributed between your feet not only from side to side but also from front to back. If you are leaning back on your heels you won’t be able to generate as much power and if you are leaning forward on your toes the swing will be inhibited. Proper balance means a powerful transfer of weight during the downswing. For lefthanders this means loading up as you turn back to your left side and then pushing forward with your legs as you start back down.

How to Check Your Proper Grip And Why it is Important.

How to Check Your Proper Grip
And Why it is Important.

To continue our series of golfing tips and strategies here is the next addition, the importance of maintaining a proper grip of the golf club. I hope you find some value and instruction from this article.

The first thing to check to make sure that you are gripping the golf club correctly is how the grip is set in your hands. A common mistake is to hold the grip in the palm of your hands instead of your fingers. Make sure that the grip rests in the three lower fingers of your left hand (if you are left handed) and the first three fingers of the right hand. This is the best golf grip to achieve consistency in your swing.

Once you make sure that you are holding the grip in your fingers, you should check the alignment of your hands. The thumb of the right hand should be pointing straight down the shaft. To properly align the top hand look at the space between your thumb and index finger, the V that is formed by the two should be pointing up at your left shoulder. If the V points behind you the shot will result in a slice and if the V points at your chest, you are going to hook the ball.

The correct golf grip is one that makes sure that the head of the club is square at impact. When you line up the face of the club behind the ball at set up it should be facing your target and the club head should be in the same position when you finish your swing. If you are having trouble getting the ball up in the air, tilt your hands forward.

Another important factor to check for the proper grip is how tightly you are holding the club. One common mistake many golfers make is that they grip the club more tightly at the top of the back swing thinking this will generate more power. It will not. The more tension you add to the swing, the less distance you are going to get. You should apply the same amount of pressure from the start of the swing to the finish. The experts will tell you that on a scale of 1 to 10 with ten being the tightest grip, you should be about a 4. An easy way to loosen the grip and relieve the tension is to waggle the club right before starting the swing.

Great Lefty Does It Again For His Third Masters Win

Phil Mickelson: Wins By 3 Strokes in the Masters at Augusta
Great Lefty Does It Again For His Third Masters Win

Phil Mickelson made one last birdie for a 3-stroke victory in this year’s Masters. He played brilliantly throughout his last round with no better shot than the 207-yard 6-iron that set up a birdie at the 13th and was nominated by many golfing experts as the shot of the tournament, of the year, and maybe of Phil Mickelson's career.
"In the last year, we've been through a lot and it's been tough. And to be on the other end and feel this kind of jubilation is incredible," said Mickelson.
The Masters began with Tiger returning from a sex scandal, which shattered his image but left his game intact. He captivated and thrilled the crowds by working into contention until the putts stopped falling and he tied for fourth.
Lee Westwood’s time will come no doubt. He's too talented to continually watch other players celebrate on Sunday. "Phil, being the champion he is, hit some great shots coming down the stretch," said Westwood, who closed with a 71. "He's been through hard times recently, and he deserves a break or two."
But it ended with Mickelson making some amazing and unforgettable shots. Mickelson finished at 16-under 272, the best score by a Masters champion since Woods in 2001.
Just like his last Masters title in 2006, the outcome was never in doubt as Mickelson arrived on the 18th green. Unlike any of his other 40 victories around the world, there was never this much emotion. Mickelson shared a long embrace with his caddie, Jim "Bones" Mackay, who has carried his bag for many great and memorable victories but none more so than this one. Mackay sat on the grass, legs crossed like a schoolboy, during the green jacket ceremony. He could barely speak."Twenty years from now, nothing will compare to this," Mackay said.
Westwood was third at the British Open last summer, tied for third at the PGA Championship, and dealt with another close call at the Masters with his highest finish ever in a major. He remains among the best players without one. It would seem that it’s only a matter of time before its Lee Westwood’s turn.
Mickelson became the eighth player with at least three Masters Titles and it was the fourth major of his career. The signature moment came on the 13th, "I was going to have to go through that gap if I lay up or went for the green," Mickelson said. "I was going to have to hit a decent shot. The gap ... it wasn't huge, but it was big enough, you know, for a ball to fit through."I just felt like at that time, I needed to trust my swing and hit a shot," he said. "And it came off perfect."Mickelson was the only player among the top 10 to play without a bogey in the final round.
As with every Masters Championship there were many great stories arising from the drama of this fantastic tournament. For Mickelson, it's a celebration to remember.
Congratulations Phil Mickelson the best Lefty in the world of golf.

How to Grip a Golf Club

How To Grip a Golf Club
The Importance of How Grip a Golf Club To Properly

You are not going to be able to consistently hit good golf shots without mastering the proper way to hold a golf club. The grip is one of the most important elements of the setup that many bogey golfers neglect. A few minor changes could lead to major improvements in your scores.

The golf grip starts with placing your right hand on the club if you are left handed. The grip should be held in the fingers of the hand with every finger but the index finger wrapped around it. Next place the left hand on the club holding the grip with the first three fingers and laying the pinkie finger on top of the index finger of the top hand. This is known as the Vardon overlapping grip; if it does n’t feel comfortable you can interlock the pinkie and index finger in an interlocking grip.

The interlock grip is the choice of golfing greats Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. If you choose to go with it make sure that the club does n’t slip into your palm, it needs to be held by the fingers to achieve the proper control. The positioning of the hands is very important as well. The V that is formed by the space between your thumb and index finger on your bottom hand needs to point directly at the back shoulder. If it points left of that you risk hitting a hook and if it goes right a slice will result.

Grip pressure is also very important. If you squeeze the grip too tightly it will cause tension in your arms and shoulders that will inhibit your golf swing. You only want to apply enough pressure to keep control of the club. No more. Golfing great Sam Sneed always said to make believe that the club is a baby bird that you are holding in your hand; don’t strangle it. Another analogy that many pros use is to compare the golf grip to gripping a tube of toothpaste. Hold it tight enough to keep the tube in your hands but not so tight that any of the toothpaste squeezes out.

You will find great deals on equipment and accessories. Instructional lessons from a master like Jack Nicklaus will show you a simple correct way of holding the golf club. Playing the Game of Golf

Important Secrets to Remember

Arnold Palmer said it best, “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” Even the very best players spend their lives always trying to get better. No matter how good or bad you are there is always room for improvement. Better equipment and instruction can help anyone take strokes off their score.

Playing the game of golf begins by understanding the fundamentals of the golf swing. How you set up to the ball and hold the club will determine how far and in which direction you hit it. Posture is very important. Stand tall with your knees flexed slightly and bend at the hip. Let your arms hang naturally in front of you. Your feet should be shoulder length apart with the ball positioned a few inches behind your front foot. Your hands should be facing each other as they are placed on the club with the little finger of your left hand (for lefties) overlapping or interlocked with the index finger of your right.

Now that you are properly positioned to hit the golf ball, we can focus on the swing.
With both arms extended begin to slowly take the club back. Start the club on a line directly behind the ball and slowly move it inside the target as you turn your shoulders.
It is very important to keep your front arm straight as you go back. You only want to raise the club to shoulder level before starting back down. The best golfers will start their downswing with a turn of the hips and then push the golf club down straight toward the ground. As you rotate your shoulders roll your wrists over as you approach the ball and keep the elbow of your back arm tucked in; do not let it fly open. Complete the swing with a full finish wrapping the golf club around your back.

When you are learning to play golf it is important to keep the golf swing as compact as possible to limit the things that can go wrong. The secret to getting better is practice and there is no doubt that anyone will benefit from the proper instruction. Even the pros on tour have coaches that they work with to improve their golf swings. Playing the game of golf is much more enjoyable when you are hitting good shots.

You will find great deals on equipment and accessories. Instructional lessons from masters like Jack Nicklaus plus written articles on all the aspects of the game.
